Yin and Yang are terms used to
describe how seemingly opposite forces are interconnected and interdependent in
nature and how they give rise to each other.
Ashtanga and Vinyasa styles of yoga
are considered ‘Yang’ practices; they are dynamic, moving, strong and
bright. In our Restorative classes
the focus is on static poses, letting us release completely to the
gravitational forces below, closing our eyes and just ‘being’ within. It is an alternative practice for those days
that a dynamic style intuitively feels inappropriate; for instance, during
emotional fatigue, when sick, during menstruation, during the full and new moon
days or when we are just plain over-worked and tired!
This way we don’t need to
skip our practice and miss out on the mental and emotional benefits of taking
some time each day to bring ourselves inside to find peace while awakening and
enlivening the cells of the body to give us the power to constructively and
positively deal with the obstacles life gives us.
